Meditation and Mindfulness with Online Flute Lessons

Creating your sense of inner peace through working with me as your flute coach.

In a technology-rich world, learning mindfulness, breathing and meditation techniques is important, and I can help through online flute lessons.

Did you know that learning an instrument, especially the flute can serve as a natural form of meditation? The repetitive nature of practice and the focus needed to play music can induce a state of mindfulness. In this state, the mind is fully engaged in the present. This meditative aspect of music can help reduce stress and promote relaxation. In my online flute lessons, I can coach adults and youth on how to practice in a meditative way.

Playing the flute requires deep concentration and a singular focus on the task at hand. This immersion in music can quiet the mind, similar to traditional meditation practices. The rhythmic patterns and melodies can create a sense of flow, where time seems to dissolve, and one becomes fully absorbed in the experience. This state of flow is associated with reduced cortisol levels, leading to lower stress and improved overall well-being.

Furthermore, the process of learning and perfecting a piece of music encourages patience and perseverance. These qualities are essential for cultivating a mindful approach to life. By dedicating time to practice, adults and youth alike can develop a greater appreciation for the present moment and the gradual progression towards mastery.

If that weren’t enough of a benefit to learning the flute, let’s talk about breathing. Breathing, of course, is the key to life! Learning how to breathe and focusing on breath control and exercises is key to meditation, the flute, and a low-stress life. I focus a lot of time in my online flute lessons on how to breathe to create a beautiful tone.

(Breathing really is the key to life in every way – learning the flute will teach you to master breathing in a natural way)

What I’m saying is that you don’t have to approach online flute lessons only as a performer. You can play the flute for flutes sake. You can learn it because it makes you feel good to conquer something new. You can learn it to reduce stress. You can play the flute to engage your creative brain, to be able to play a duet with a friend, or to play a song you saw on YouTube.

You can start to learn simply because your soul asks it of you.

If you’re ready to talk with me more about ways I can help you develop meditative and mindfulness skills through online flute lessons, please see this offer for December for the first lesson to be free! Don’t worry if you don’t have your flute yet, we can talk about your goals for yourself or your child, and how we can work together.

Writing this post reminds me of when I first started my hobby passion: riding horses.

When I started riding, I was in my mid-forties. I was out of shape and going through many personal challenges. Then I got it in my head that I was going to take riding lessons. At first, I was frustrated. It was difficult to even walk around the sand arena without my calves hurting. I was also embarrassingly uncoordinated when riding. I realized that I needed to apply what I had learned through decades of making music. I focused on the present and breathed through challenges. I understood that even the smallest step forward is further than yesterday. These are life lessons!

Then I bought my own horse. At that time, I didn’t realize that just a few months later the pandemic would hit. Along with the pandemic came significant other stresses in my life. He was an energetic horse. He was almost anxious. Because of that, we spent the Winter repeating patterns. We learned to breathe and relax in the repetition. And I learned to be confident and breathe even when he tried to fly:

(If breathing is the key to life, repetition is the key to success).

Quite literally, he and I didn’t go beyond walking that Winter. We learned to de-stress and to breathe through challenges in the ring and out in life. We learned to meditate through repetition. Overall, we learned to be mindful in the times that we spent riding. I will always value that time and that investment I made in myself.

Transforming from the day we met on the bottom, to feeling pretty awesome at the top!

If you’ve been considering flute lessons for yourself or your child, count on me! The truth is, learning to play the flute is enough for its own sake. The personal benefits of relaxation, stress relief and a meditative mindset are something that you’ll benefit from for years to come.

(P.S. There are hundreds of other benefits, including the social opportunities, cognitive benefits into old age, performance opportunities if you want them, college scholarships (there are more music scholarships than athletic ones, and more!)
